Save Music in Canberra no.2 (2025)
It's 2025 and the School of Music faces another round of changes, could I say cuts, restructures, changed purposes and roles. The SOM would move to a new "School of Creative and Cultural Practice" with interest in "Indigenous music in a contemporary context, and Music and Wellbeing" and with an emphasis on technology and production of contemporary music (essentially quoted from the first CT article linked below). Sounds like the musical interests of the old CIT with the addition of Indigenous music and a concern with research rather than performance.
And it's not just the Music School. They are planning Changes ("destruction") to the Australian National Dictionary and the Australian Dictionary or Biography. "LOST FOR WORDS / Just hours after I penned a protest against the ANU's planned destruction of national institutions such as the Australian Dictionary of Biography, I learned it is also proposing to cut the Australian National Dictionary - if ever there was a truly national program. I am lost for words - as we all will be if this barbaric cost-cutting is allowed to continue. / Prof Peter Stanley, Dickson" CT Letters 17 Jul 25.

Dear ....., / I am writing today to notify you that Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell is tendering her resignation from her role as Vice-Chancellor and President of the Australian National University. / Distinguished Professor Bell will be undertaking a period of leave, and will return to the ANU School of Cybernetics in due course. / On behalf of the ANU Council, I thank Distinguished Professor Bell for her service as Vice-Chancellor and President of our University. / Distinguished Professor Bell's statement is below. / Kind regards / Julie Bishop / Chancellor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi everyone, / I am officially tendering my resignation as Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University, which will be accepted by the Chancellor and Council. This was not an easy decision. / As many of you know, the ANU has been a special place for me, ever since I was a child. And being its 13th Vice Chancellor has been an extraordinary privilege and also a heavy responsibility. / Like the rest of our community, I believe firmly in our delivering on our national mission - to create and transmit knowledge through research and teaching of the highest quality. And know that doing this requires a solid financial, cultural and operational foundation. / Achieving such a foundation has been difficult and this has been a very hard time for our community. I am grateful for all the ways that people have shown up and for all the work that has been done and the progress we have made. / Like the rest of our community, I know there is still more work to do so. I very much want to see the ANU thrive into the future and for it to continue to be a remarkable place and I don't want to stand in the way of that. / So I am stepping down from my role as Vice Chancellor. My plan is to take time off, including a period of study leave, and then return to the School of Cybernetics as a Distinguished Professor where I hope to continue to contribute to our community. / Distinguished Professor / Genevieve Bell

Introducing Interim Vice-Chancellor & President - emailed to ANU Alumni and Philanthropy, 12 Sep 2025 (excuse formatting)
Dear ....., / Following yesterday's announcement, I am honoured to be taking up the appointment as Interim Vice-Chancellor and President of the Australian National University. I greatly value the ongoing support and engagement of our donors and alumni, which are central to the strength and vitality of our University community. / My three immediate priorities in the role are to create stability, rebuild trust, and develop a deliberate and transparent plan that unites our community. / While recent times have been challenging, I believe through embracing our community, academic foundations and placing rigorous enquiry at the heart of all we do, we will set ourselves on a path of collective success and performance whilst achieving outstanding student and staff experience. / Kind regards, / Professor Rebekah Brown FSAA / Interim Vice-Chancellor & President

Save Music in Canberra no.1 (2012)
The ANU School of Music is under threat. Join the campaign to save high level music teaching and, with it, the heart of skilled music in Canberra (May 2012)
They tell us the School of Music will continue, but no jazz school and it seems limited elite musical training. We'll see. Here below are various articles, etc, on what happened to ~Sept 2012. For any further news, videos, etc, see Save the ANU School of Music. I expect the worst, but maybe that's just me. What a 100th birthday present for Canberra!
Writing in September 2015, I can only say what a sorry mess!
Jan 2019 and we lose another Head of School
